25 June 2026One of the key concerns raised during the Lomaiviti Provincial Council Meeting held on 27–28 May 2026 was the continued presence of the remains of the Sinu-i-Wasa III vessel in Levuka.
Speaking during the Council deliberations, Levuka District Representative, Mr. Taniela Tamani, highlighted the growing concern of communities regarding the abandoned vessel, which has remained stranded since Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston struck Fiji in February 2016.
Mr. Tamani stressed that, after more than ten years, the wreck continues to be an eyesore in the historic town of Levuka and poses ongoing environmental, safety and social concerns for nearby communities. He called on relevant authorities to work collaboratively towards finding a long-term solution for the removal of the vessel.
The issue has also been raised at the national level, with Government agencies acknowledging that the removal process requires legal and environmental clearances, including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), before any dismantling or removal works can commence.
As Levuka continues to progress as Fiji’s first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, district representatives emphasised the importance of preserving and protecting its unique environment, heritage and marine resources for future generations.
The Lomaiviti Provincial Council remains committed to ensuring that concerns raised through district representatives are conveyed to the relevant authorities for appropriate action and follow-up.
