More than 100 people from island communities across the Pacific are currently taking part in discussions on climate change.

The Pacific is recognised as one of the regions of the world that is heavily affected and experiencing significant impacts of climate change.

The gathering, currently being held at Denarau in Nadi, brings together participants through the climate change arm of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Yesterday, Wednesday 10 August 2026, the group visited Naidiri Village in the district of Malomalo, Nadroga, to see firsthand the work being undertaken by the community to address the impacts of climate change.

This includes coral planting and educating young people on the wise and sustainable use of their coastal areas, reefs and marine resources. The project terminology supports baravi as “coast/shore” and cakau as “reef.”

The group also visited Naidiri’s traditional fishing grounds, where the community has established a tabu area as part of efforts to restore marine resources and species for which the area was once known.

Villagers confirmed that marine species which had disappeared for some time are now beginning to return.

The sharing of information and discussions among Pacific participants are continuing at Denarau. The project sources support itukutuku in the sense of information, report, message or news, and related forms for discussion and exchange of information. They also support vakaitavi as having a share or taking part in something.

The discussions will conclude on Friday, 21 August 2026.
