KY6 Cooperative Limited

Kabara Yavusa Ono (KY6) Cooperative Limited was established in September 2023 and represents a community-owned enterprise based on Kabara Island, Fiji, with strategic operations located in Valelevu, Nasinu. The cooperative is a registered legal entity dedicated to the preservation of Fijian cultural heritage through the sustainable utilization of timber.

The enterprise specializes in the production of high-value Vesi (Intsia bijuga) timber products, ranging from traditional artifacts to modern value-added items. These products are crafted using traditional knowledge passed down through generations, ensuring that every piece reflects the authentic cultural identity of the people of Kabara. By focusing on the use of timber off-cuts, KY6 promotes environmental sustainability while honoring the sacred status of the Vesi tree in Fijian culture.

Since its inception, KY6 has seen significant interest from local residents, tourists, and international representatives, proving the strong market demand for high-quality, culturally significant timber products. However, to meet this growing demand and overcome the challenges of remote island logistics, the cooperative is scaling its operations to improve production capacity and diversify its product lines into furniture and other bespoke timber goods.

The core objective of KY6 Cooperative Limited is to create sustainable, inclusive livelihoods for the community of Kabara, with a specific focus on empowering youth and women. The business serves a vital social and economic role by providing decent employment and fostering cultural transmission, ensuring that traditional wood-carving skills are preserved for future generations.

KY6 is committed to expanding its reach into regional and international export markets. To achieve this, the cooperative is investing in skilled workforce training, export readiness, and sustainable production practices that align with Fiji’s green and creative economy goals. By reducing waste and maximizing the value of every timber resource, KY6 ensures that the economic benefits of their natural heritage remain within the community.

Through this expansion, KY6 aims to become a leading example of a community-led enterprise that balances commercial success with cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.
